Krisak to Testify Before United States Senate Committee

On Wednesday, July 13, Wendy Krisak, director of counseling and DeSales alumna, will testify before the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) of the United States Senate, chaired by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN). The testimony is for a roundtable discussion entitled “Campus Safety: Improving Prevention and Response Rates.” 

The HELP roundtable will examine the prevalence of bullying and hazing at colleges and universities and efforts designed to reduce and prevent incidents. Krisak will give her perspective on the topic and its impact on student learning. She will also offer recommendations on how to improve campus safety in these areas, including programs and activities she oversees on the DeSales campus.

DeSales Hosts First International Alumni Reception

 On Saturday, July 2, DeSales University hosted a reception at the Market Tavern in London for alumni living in England and Europe and for students and graduates of St. Mary's University in Twickenham who have studied at DeSales as exchange students. 

DeSales Offers CFP Board-Registered Certificate and Undergraduate Programs in Financial Planning

DeSales University has registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) to offer the first CFP Board-Registered programs in the Lehigh Valley. The University’s financial planning track, offered in the finance major, and the certificate in financial planning program were recently approved and certified. The track is taught in both the traditional day program and online in the adult evening program (ACCESS). The certificate program is available to students who already have a bachelor’s degree, can be completed in less than one year, and is also offered online.

New Students Pack 25,000 Meals for Those in Need

The new semester just started, but members of DeSales University’s Class of 2020 are already making an impact. More than 200 students spent their second day of freshman orientation working on a service project. The students packed 25,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now. The meals will be sent to families in need all around the world.

Fellow at Thomas More College to Speak at Ruggiero Lecture

The 2016 Ruggiero Lecture on Catholic Education will take place on Monday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the DeSales University Center on the Center Valley Campus.

Sponsored by the Salesian Center for Faith & Culture at DeSales, this event is free and open to the public. The title of this year’s lecture is “Happiness, Culture & Virtue: Re-Stating the Case for Catholic Education” and will feature Ryan Topping, D.Phil.

A native of Saskatoon, Canada, Topping earned an MA in Philosophy from the University of Manitoba as well as an M.Phil. and a Doctorate in Theology from the University of Oxford. He held the Pope John XXIII Chair of Studies in Catholic Theology at St. Thomas University in Canada, and is Fellow at Thomas More College of the Liberal Arts in New Hampshire.

Topping has published on a variety of Catholic themes and figures, from St. Augustine, to Dante, to G.K. Chesterton in academic and popular journals and has published six books, including Rebuilding Catholic Culture: How the Catechism Can Shape our Common Life, and most recently, two works on the philosophy of Catholic education. He has also presented widely on Catholic radio and TV networks including EWTN.

Initially begun to commemorate the canonization of St. Leonie de Sales Aviat this series was renamed in 2005 in memory of Anthony J. Ruggiero, an adjunct faculty member who taught the philosophy of education and helped supervise the student teacher program at DeSales University. DeSales University Announces Retirement of Father Bernard F. O’Connor, OSFS

W. Douglas Brown, chairman of DeSales University Board of Trustees, announces the retirement of the Very Rev. Bernard F. O’Connor, OSFS. Fr. O’Connor has served as the University’s third president since July 1, 1999, and has overseen DeSales’ continued growth and academic success. The University recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and welcomed the largest freshman class in school history.

On Wednesday, August 24, the DeSales University Department of Nursing celebrated its attainment of accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The accreditation action is effective as of Fall 2015 and extends to June 2021.
