Supply-Chain

The DeSales University MBA program, in cooperation with the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), is pleased to announce a collaborative partnership.

Key objectives of the partnership are to create awareness of the discipline, to facilitate the development of a healthy Supply Chain Management workforce, and to enhance the overall competitive position of companies in the greater Lehigh Valley.

In the United States, the concept of Supply Chain Management has been in existence for more than 100 years.  It involves optimizing the flow of information, goods or services, and money from a company’s supplier (and their suppliers) through to the company’s customer (and their customers).

MBA Director and Associate Professor of Business at DeSales, Dr. David Gilfoil, recently announced a new concentration in Supply Chain Management as part of the DeSales MBA program.  “This partnership is a perfect segue and natural step in the right direction as we launch our new concentration,” Gilfoil said. “Our MBA program prides itself on its quality relationships with local/regional companies, its deeply experienced adjunct faculty, and a healthy roster of MBA student-to-company engagements that include market-research studies, business development activities, and leadership development opportunities. This is truly an exciting time for us.”

George Nisiotis, president of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of ISM, shares Gilfoil’s enthusiasm.  “We have been looking for a quality partner like DeSales MBA for some time. We are eager to leverage our joint resources to serve the study of Supply Chain and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of company supply operations in the Lehigh Valley. Our membership is fully committed to work with DeSales to this end.”

The Division of Performing Arts is pleased to announce its annual Theatre Tea Talk, this year in conjunction with its upcoming production of Sophokles’ Elektra.  The talk, titled “Exploring Grief” is scheduled for Sunday, February 7, at 2:00 PM in the Gambet Center for Business and Healthcare on the DeSales campus, and is provided as an enrichment event before the opening of the production on Wednesday, February 24.

“We began these enrichment presentations a few years ago and they’ve been very well received,” says John Bell, head of the division of performing arts. “We try to offer interesting programs to illuminate some of the more complex themes in the upcoming production. Our patrons enjoy the opportunity for advance exploration.”

“Exploring Grief” will examine the deeper motives behind Sophokles’ grief stricken Elektra and her obsessive quest for vengeance. The presentation will feature Bro. Daniel Wisniewski, head of the division of sciences and mathematics at DeSales, Dr. Galina Yermolenko, professor of English at DeSales and Mr. Dick Williams, a clinical social worker and social work educator. The panel will provide insight into the grieving process through the lenses of the play, modern behavior science, and Salesian philosophy.

Brother Daniel P. Wisniewski, O.S.F.S., Ph.D. has been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics/Computer Science at DeSales University since 2001, and currently serves as Head of the Division of Sciences & Mathematics. In addition to his mathematics teaching and research, Brother Dan pursues a variety of studies related to the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, particularly spiritual friendship, grief, and the intersection of Salesian spirituality and the science-religion dialogue.

Dick Williams graduated from the University of Connecticut with his Masters Degree in Social Work. His professional career has been both as a clinical social worker and social work educator.  A majority of his clinical experience has been as a mental health practitioner in both the military and the Veterans Administration working especially with combat veterans and prisoners of war. Dick has taught at the undergraduate level for DeSales University and at Marywood University Graduate School of Social Work DeSales campus. Dick is also a founding member of a professional consulting group training mental health and social service providers.

Galina Yermolenko is Associate Professor of English in the Humanities Department at DeSales University. She received her Ph.D. in English from Marquette University, with a specialty in British Medieval and Renaissance Literature. She also holds a doctorate degree in Germanic Philology from Simferopol State University. Dr. Yermolenko teaches a variety of courses, including Chaucer; Shakespeare; Renaissance Literature; Russian Literature; European Literature; Fiction; and Drama. Her scholarly interests involve early modern literary and cultural relations between Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean world.

The cost for the event is $11 per person and includes Greek pastries, coffee and tea, as well as the presentation. Refreshments and tours of the state-of-the-art Gambet Center for Business and Healthcare are available beginning at 1:30 PM. The tea talk begins at 2:00 p.m.

DeSales Physician Assistant Students

For the fourteenth consecutive year, DeSales University physician assistant (PA) graduates have a 100 percent first time pass rate on the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE).

The graduating class of 2015 was composed of 51 students who graduated on September 1, 2015 and three who will graduate on January 23, 2016. This is the first expansion class for the PA Program.

PANCE, the nation-wide examination given to graduating physician assistants, must be passed in order to be eligible for licensure in all 50 states. While the DeSales Class of 2015 had a 100 percent pass rate, the national average last year was 96%.  In the last 5 years, with DeSales consistent at a 100% pass rate, the national average for the same time period was 94 percent.

“We are really proud of our students and the hard work they have put in to achieve this wonderful result,” said Dr. Wayne Stuart, director of the physician assistant program.  “We are very happy that these results show we have maintained the quality of the program while expanding to provide more physician assistants for the health care needs of the Lehigh Valley and the nation.  These outcomes certainly support the concept that the DeSales PA Program is one of the best in the nation.”

The PA Program at DeSales first admitted students in 1997. Physician Assistants are licensed medical professionals who work under the supervision of licensed physicians. They practice in both general and specialty medicine and surgery, and perform routine duties normally reserved for physicians.

Erin Joyce Receives ANPF Scholarship

Erin Joyce ’95, (above right) a graduate of the DeSales undergraduate nursing program and a student in the DeSales University MSN program in the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track, was recently awarded a scholarship to continue her studies from the American Nurse Practitioner Foundation (ANPF).

Twelve scholarship winners were selected from a record number of national applicants, who submitted a transcript, letter of recommendation, and personal essay listing accomplishments and career goals.

“Erin consistently demonstrates a level of professionalism, interpersonal skills and communication in the clinical setting second to none,” said Lisa A. Johnson, DrNP, CRNP, ACNP-BC, assistant professor at DeSales who wrote Joyce’s recommendation letter.

“As a scholar, Erin surpasses the level of a novice NP despite still being in her clinical year of studies.”

“I am blessed to have exceptional students in the AGACNP program, being able to highlight the clinical skills and intelligence they exhibit is the highest honor as their professor,” said Johnson.

The ANFP connects nurse practitioners to the tools and resources they need to provide excellent, accessible health care to patients. The group funds NP education and research, delivers relevant disease state information to NPs and their patients, and highlights NP humanitarian efforts and contributions. The group also seeks to engage all American NPs as they lead the way in delivering access to safe, high-quality care to an ever-growing patient population.

For the third time in its history, DeSales University’s mid-year commencement was cancelled on Saturday, January 23, because of snow.

Graduates will receive their diplomas and a program from the ceremony in the mail, and all graduates are invited to walk in the May 2016 commencement.

Rev. Bernard F. O’Connor, OSFS, president of DeSales University, and the DeSales community mailed diplomas to 147 graduating students.

In addition to the January 2016 degree recipients, DeSales awarded 238 degrees to students in September 2015. Because there is no formal September ceremony, these graduates were invited to participate in the January event.

A total of 6 doctorates, 184 master’s degrees, and 195 bachelor’s degrees were awarded.

The graduating students from both January 2016 and September 2015 are from the following states: 320 from Pennsylvania; 18 from New Jersey, 9 from New York, 4 each from California, Colorado, and Connecticut, 3 each from Florida, Texas, and Virginia, 2 each from Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, and South Carolina; and 1 each from Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. One graduate is from the country of Romania.

The Department of Philosophy and Theology at DeSales University will host a lecture titled “Family and the New Evangelization: Understanding the Synods in Light of the Ministry of Pope Francis” on Thursday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Commonwealth Room at the DeSales University Center.

Dr. John GrabowskiDr. John Grabowski (right), associate professor of Moral Theology at The Catholic University of America and member of the Pontifical Council for the Family, will be the speaker.

Grabowski is widely published in the areas of moral theology, marriage, sexuality and bioethics. His articles have appeared in scholarly journals such as The Thomist, Studia Moralia, and the National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly as well as popular journals such as America, Commonweal, The Living Light, and Share the Word.  His book, Sex and Virtue: An Introduction to Sexual Ethics, was published by the Catholic University of America Press in August 2003.  He also wrote the Foreword to the 1997 English edition of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

From 2005-2009 Grabowski served as a theological advisor to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on Marriage and Family. He also served as an expert auditor at the 2015 Synod on the Family. He and his wife were appointed to the Pontifical Council for the Family by Pope Benedict XVI in the fall of 2009 where they serve as a member couple. He is also currently serving as a theological advisor to the U.S.C.C.B. Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family, and Youth.

Opinion: Who's really responsible for sheltering the homeless?

Please note: This opinion originally appeared in The Morning Call on January 29, 2016.

Last Saturday morning, with 9 inches of snow already on the ground, the staff at the warming station in Allentown sent its overnight guests to the streets because it only operates at night.

If it had not been for a local pastor, the Rev. Bob Stevens at Zion's United Church of Christ, these people would have been left to try to find shelter in a public building, a business trying to remain open or an abandoned building. And what about the people who were not at the warming station the night before who may not have known about the good pastor and his open doors? How could warming station staff send out their guests with a possible blizzard approaching?

Corinne FeldmanIt made me think about who is really responsible for sheltering the homeless. Why are there only a few who will take responsibility for problems of the homeless? Are we as a society too stoic and self-determined so that we believe that those who face blizzard-like conditions homeless should have thought about that before they "made all their bad choices"? Are we worried about becoming too involved, caring too much, only to find too many one-way, dead-end streets in our society?

It would be easy to blame the operators of the warming station for sending these people to the street. Such stations are opened on the heels of a public health concern. Who wants to have citizens of their town freezing to death on their streets? But it is also a public service based on the principles of justice and beneficence.

So how could people be left to fend for themselves in these harsh conditions? The warming station operators could say they don't have funds to pay for daytime staff. They don't have a food source. Maybe they don't have permission to keep open the building, which is owned by the city. But could there have been a solution? A work-around?

The gravity of this situation for the homeless won't be understood for some time. However, each challenge must spark solutions to minimize future risk.

First is the issue of the Code Blue designation when the temperature dips below 32. Who issues the Code Blue warning that alerts groups who deal with the homeless? Lehigh County Emergency Management? If so, there was nothing on its website during the storm. What about Allentown? Shouldn't this designation allow for other buildings owned by the city to remain open as a public health measure? And why is the temperature cut off at 32 degrees for Code Blue when data support a health danger starting at 40 degrees?

Second, those who are in the business of providing shelter as a public service should have accountability. Many of these shelters and warming stations receive monetary support from citizens, government and organizations with the expectation that shelter is provided. All are accountable to their stakeholders. Is the city of Allentown responsible for sheltering these people? Is it relieved of its responsibility because another entity provides this service? Another example is the accountability of disaster preparedness where organizations accept risk for the greater good. Successful organizations balance risk and preparedness with the ethical principles of justice and not doing harm. Just as in disaster preparedness, when running a winter shelter, one must be prepared for winter weather.

Finally, there is the humanistic aspect. Is it not all of our responsibility to care for those in need? If you've accepted the public commission to care for the most vulnerable, you can't abandon that post in the worst of times. At the same time, if you haven't officially accepted that post, you aren't absolved of your moral responsibility.

Although not bound by grants or public funding, Zion's Church opened its doors to those most in need of shelter from danger, just as it did in 1777 when the church housed the Liberty Bell, keeping it safe from the British during the Revolutionary War.

Let it be a lesson learned: True responsibility comes from within.

Corinne Feldman, who lives in Lower Macungie Township, is a physician assistant, an assistant professor in the DeSales University Physician Assistant Program and executive director of the DeSales Free Clinic, which provides free health care to the homeless. DeSales Winter Graduation Welcome Speech by Elad Orenstein '16Even though the DeSales Winter 2016 commencement ceremony was cancelled, we would like to share with you the welcome speech that was to be delivered by DeSales ACCESS graduate Elad Orenstein ’16,  Business Administration:

President O’Connor, honored guests, other members of the platform party, faculty, graduates, and their family and friends, I am honored to have the opportunity to welcome all of you today to share in what, for many of us, is our greatest achievement to date.

While the roads that we have each taken to reach this point vary greatly from one another, the importances of our accomplishments do not.

I believe that I speak on behalf of all of my fellow classmates when I say that this journey would have been far more challenging without the love, support, and encouragement that you have all offered throughout this process.

Personally speaking, the impact that my education has had on those close to me, particularly my wife Inbal and two sons Eli & Oz, has been paramount in driving me to set and reach new goals that I had not previously considered a possibility.

Likewise, I’m sure that every graduate in attendance has had someone in their lives to whom they attribute a great deal of their own success.

For this reason, today would simply not carry the same amount of weight to us without every one of you here to share it with. So as we gather to celebrate as our countless hours of hard work come to fruition, I would like to once again thank all of you, not only for being present, but also for everything that you have done for us along the way that has made today possible.

So, please enjoy the ceremonies along with us. And to my fellow graduating class of 2016, congratulations and good luck in whatever path you may choose and opportunities you may take the chance to capitalize upon.

DeSales Chemistry Lab 2014

The Natural Science Department at DeSales University recently received a 2016 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College (PITTCON) Grant to partially support the purchase of a Horiba Fluoromax-4C Spectrofluorometer.

Some chemicals emit light after they absorb light; this process is called fluorescence. A spectrofluorometer is used to detect the light emitted by fluorescent chemicals.

Fluoromax Spectrofluorometer“The addition of a spectrofluorometer will enable the addition of several unique laboratory experiments to courses required by the biochemistry-molecular biology and chemistry majors, enhancing the educational opportunities available to our students,” said Dr. Julie Himmelberger, assistant professor of biochemistry and chair of the Natural Science Department.

Thirteen colleges and universities from across the country were recipients of the PITTCON grant, which are awarded to college science departments for the purchase of scientific equipment, audio-visual or other teaching aids, and/or library materials for use in the teaching of science at the undergraduate level. Enrollment at schools that receive the grant cannot exceed 5,000 full-time students. Himmelberger and Dr. Sara Hayik, assistant professor of chemistry, submitted the grant application.

During the last 7 years, courses required for the biochemistry-molecular biology major have evolved in an attempt to meet the curriculum recommendations of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The ASBMB recommended curriculum includes laboratory experiences with various types of spectroscopy including fluorescence. A spectrofluorometer will strengthen the physical biochemistry portion of the curriculum and expose students to the diverse applications for studying biochemical molecules and systems using fluorescence.

“This instrument will improve the laboratories that can be offered by the three chemistry, six biology, one physicist and one biochemistry-molecular biology faculty in the Natural Science Department allowing for better integration between these scientific disciplines and a well rounded experience for the natural science majors at DeSales University,” said Himmelberger

DeSales University launches Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner ProgramDeSales University is adding a new Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner  (PMHNP) program to their already comprehensive selection of nursing degree offerings. Beginning fall of 2016, nursing students can complete the program in three years part-time or two years full-time.

“The local health care employers are excited about this new PMHNP program,” says Carol Gullo Mest, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, director of the master of science in nursing programs at DeSales. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for DeSales Nursing to help fill the growing demand for nurse practitioners in the psychiatric realm. The career and salary outlook is very strong for graduates of this program.”

The PMHNP diagnoses and manages chronic and acute mental and behavioral health problems. These highly-skilled nurses diagnose mental and behavioral health problems and  manage  treatment care plans that may include psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and consultation.

PMHNPs work in diverse range of healthcare settings including hospitals, skilled-care facilities, mental health clinics, and other outpatient treatment programs.

“Our University really does have a wonderful reputation in the health sciences. People in the healthcare industry often tell me that DeSales is one of the best nursing schools in the Lehigh Valley — they say ‘I can always tell who the DeSales students are.’ It sounds almost cliché, but our nurses really do stand out in the healthcare industry,” says Mest.

Student clinical placements, in nationally-ranked clinical facilities throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond, are coordinated by the University.

Graduates of the DeSales PMHNP program are eligible to take the Psychiatric-Mental Health (Across the Lifespan) Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Applications are being accepted for a Fall 2016 start. More information can be found at www.desales.edu/np.  For more information contact Mest at carol.mest@desales.edu.

A video recap of the 2015 Dinner Dance

As part of its 50th Anniversary year, DeSales University will host the 35th annual dinner dance, The Golden Gala, on March 19 in Billera Hall. Cocktail hour will begin at 7 p.m., a gourmet dinner will follow at 8 p.m. and dancing until midnight will conclude the evening. Admission is $225 per person.

According to regular attendees, it’s one of the area’s most anticipated annual events and more than 850 people are expected to attend. As the university’s major event-based fundraiser, 100 percent of the evening’s income, about $150,000 annually, goes directly into financial aid for DeSales students, 97 percent of whom receive some form of financial assistance.

Chairpersons of the event are Chuck and Marty McIntyre and they will be joined by area business, professional and community leaders as well as DeSales alumni, who are sponsoring tables or providing contributions. The McIntyres are also celebrating 50 years of marriage this year.

During the reception, guests will enjoy assorted hors’ doeuvres and a full bar. The dinner will consist of jumbo shrimp cocktail martini, carved herb encrusted beef tenderloin with Bordelaise sauce and sea bass with jumbo lump crab meat, smoked gouda and scallion smashed potatoes, and asparagus bundles.

A special presentation of gold and dark chocolate cups, filled with raspberry Chambord mousse and finished with Godiva chocolate sauce, garnished with fresh raspberries and a custom 50th Anniversary chocolate, will be served for dessert.

Will Neuert, associate professor of theatre, created the decorations for the Golden Gala-themed dance as he has for the past 18 years. Neuert’s decorations this year are inspired by the University’s 50th Anniversary. The room will be draped with swags of rich golden and aubergine fabric. Two immense sparkling chandeliers, which were designed and built by several DSU theatre design students, and five rotating mirror showers illuminate the tables and dance floor.

An eight foot wide gold leaf seal of the University hangs between tall tied back draperies of gold and amongst thousands of twinkling lights as a backdrop to the stage. Glittering gold overlays and a special ice sculpture commemorate the University’s Golden Anniversary.

Music for dancing will be provided by The Rich Postmontier Ensemble.

DeSales Dancers Rehearse TrekkingDeSales Dancers Rehearse Trekking

The division of performing arts at DeSales University is pleased to announce the capstone event in the 2016 dance season, the Dance Ensemble Concert opening Friday March 18 in the Main Stage theatre of the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts.

The DeSales Dance Ensemble showcases a spectacular slate of original choreography by the esteemed choreographers on the Dance Department faculty. And, continuing its commitment to historically significant masterworks, this year’s concert will feature a restaging of select movements from the legendary ballet choreographer Antony Tudor’s “Dark Elegies.”

“Dark Elegies” made its world premiere in February 1937 by Ballet Rambert at the Duchess Theatre, London, England. The work is danced to the Song Cycle ‘Kindertotenlieder” (“Songs on the Death of Children”) by Gustav Mahler and consists of five songs to lyrics by Friedrich Rückert.

Tudor described this work as his favorite ballet. And many consider it to be his greatest. From tender moments of quiet devastation to careering bursts of rage, Tudor’s “ballet requiem" expresses the raw emotion of a tight–knit community faced with the inexplicable loss of their beloved children.

According to Sally Bliss, trustee of the Antony Tudor Ballet Trust, "'Dark Elegies' became his greatest work. The rest of the ballet world was still primarily a place for fanciful creatures and worlds, while 'Dark Elegies' presented the all too real grief of a parent for a lost child.”

“The Dance Department was honored to have been awarded the rights to reconstruct portions of "Dark Elegies" says John Bell, head of the division of performing arts. “It is our distinct privilege to be trusted to offer this remarkable and rare experience to our student dancers and patrons ‘Dark Elegies’ is considered by many to be one of the foremost dance masterpieces of the last century, often hailed as one of the great achievements of psychological modernism in ballet.”

Antony Tudor (1908-1987) was a legendary English ballet choreographer working in the early and mid-twentieth century. Tudor made his professional dancing debut in 1929 and would go on to dance for such master choreographers as Michel Fokine and Frederick Ashton. His choreographic career spanned nearly 40 years and included long associations with American Ballet Theatre, the Swedish Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet. Along with George Balanchine, Antony Tudor is seen as a principal transformer of ballet into a modern art.

DeSales’ reconstruction of the Tudor work is being staged by Kirk Peterson, a répétiteur with The Tudor Trust. A répétiteur is a specialist with intimate knowledge of the repertoire who is selected to teach the movement as well as the interpretation of the roles to the company performing a dance. Mr. Peterson has had a distinguished career with American Ballet Theatre as principal dancer, choreographer, artistic director of ABT II, ballet master, principal character artist and master teaching associate, among other notable appointments.

The Dance Ensemble Concert will also feature works choreographed by dance faculty members Angela Sigley Grossman, Julia Mayo, Tara Madsen Robbins and Trinette Singleton as well as a piece choreographed by guest choreographer Jessica Chen.

Dance faculty member Angela Sigley Grossman is presenting “It’s Not What It Looks Like,” a modern dance piece exploring the various ways in which a pedestrian object—a sleeping bag—can be used and manipulated in movement. A prop study, “It’s Not What It Looks Like,” features seven dancers who slide, roll, tumble, and whirl out of control as a result of the sleeping bags’ mysterious and mystical properties. Are they manipulating the props, or are the props manipulating them?

Tara Madsen Robbins’ “Trekking” is an athletic contemporary modern piece exploring female empowerment and strength. This high-energy piece, set to the sounds of driving percussion, explores the notions of persevering, surviving, bearing down, pushing forward and tackling obstacles. It's a fierce hypnotic trek through the grind. “Trekking” was originally commissioned by Bucknell University and premiered in November of 2015.

Trinette Singleton, a former principal dancer with The Joffrey Ballet and ballet instructor at DeSales, has choreographed “LET’S ROCK” which she describes as “zestful fun with a hint of nostalgia for the rock ‘n roll era.”

Julia Mayo’s “Predator/Prey” is inspired by humans’ ability to acquire fear through indirect social observations. Featuring an ensemble of eight dancers, the work explores the transition from fearless to fearful and the individual choice we must make to avoid succumbing to our fright.

Jessica Chen, Artistic Director of J CHEN PROJECT, and a guest choreographer for the DeSales Dance Ensemble Concert, has created “Feed—Unplugged,” a new work which explores the phenomenon of social media and this generation's current obsession with selfies, instant followers, Twitter battles and particularly, the number of Likes received on posts. The work aims to open up a dialogue on the shadow of social media and the implications it has on our community at large.

The Dance Ensemble Concert runs March 18 at 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM and March 19 at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM. All performances will take place on the Main Stage of the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets for the Dance Ensemble concert are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets for groups and dance studio groups are only $5. Tickets are available by calling the Labuda box office at 610.282.3192 or online at www.desales.edu/act1.
